Gr 4-5 The Great Race Project

Columbiana County ESC and NCOESC in Ohio would like to invite 4th and 5th grade students to participate in the 6th annual “Great Race” program. Over the last 5 years classrooms from around the United States have raced across the country learning geography, social studies, science and math. Each year has been a new race. This years Great Race theme since it is an election year is the “Presidential Run” students will race from Washington DC to Honolulu, Hawaii

Here is a brief overview of the project. Fourth and fifth grade classrooms from around the nation will race from Washington DC to Hawaii. Each class will be a team and the team that gets there the quickest, spending least amount of money, stopping at all the cultural and geographically historical places given to them will be the winners. This is a 21st Century Adventure!

There will be three videoconferences. The first will be the kick off of the race on Wednesday, Feb 22nd. During this connection students and teachers will learn the rules of the race and what to expect. There will be a midpoint connection and then a final connection to announce the winner in early May.

3rd Grade Simple Machines-Rube Goldberg

A third grade classroom in Upstate NY is looking for a distance learning partner to share in their culminating activity to a Simple Machines unit. Within their home classroom, students will be drawing a Rube Goldberg inspired invention, which is to include the specific steps of how it works. We hope to type the steps to inventions into Google Documents for a partner to view. Our hope is that the long distance partner would access Google Documents to access the written steps, have a chance to type in the document to ask any questions about steps that are unclear, and then attempt to draw the machine that they think matches the steps they were given. After online feedback happens, students would complete the drawing in their own classroom before classrooms meet up via a long distance connection. Students from one classroom would show their original drawing and see if it matches the drawing the partnering student came up with from their directions. One or both classrooms could complete original drawings and steps.

Gr 8-12 The Real Vitas Bering

We are a group of 3 teachers from 3 high schools in Alaska who share content and have students collaborating on projects. We will have a teacher presenting a lesson called “The Real Vitas Bering” on February 1st 6 times during the school day. This will be a 40 minute lesson that will culminate with students learning that, as we combine modern technology with history small parts of the historical story change. In this case modern forensic science will show who Vitas Bering really was and that the history book you are using is probably not correct.
If you would like to participate let me know and we can discuss more detail.
We teach 10th grade world history - we are very interested in promoting this videoconferencing technology so we would open this up to any middle or high school class.
We are also very open to trading a lesson if you have a historical figure or lesson you would like to share.

Seventh Grade Class Quiz Challenge

We are looking for 7th grade classes that are willing to join us in a face to face (Distance Learning) Social Studies challenge.

In January we are studying China, Mongolia, and Taiwan.
I propose that we pit our classes against one another in a knowledge/trivia question setting. Our students will study 4 aspects of China, Mongolia, and Taiwan. Those categories are Geography, Recent Politics, Economy/Resources, and History.
My idea is that before we meet each class divides up into four centers, one for each category. The students develop 10 general knowledge questions from each category.
When we get together via distance learning we will take turns asking each other questions.
Please assign a team captain from each category to ask and answer the questions. (The group helps answer but no books or outside help)
Assign a scorekeeper and the first team to 20 (or whatever number we chose) wins.

So, what do you think? Comments, improvements? I have three different classes and can play three different games a game with as many classes as possible. We could do Japan in February.

Note: The teacher must check the questions to ensure that they are common knowledge/seventh grade level question.

Gr 5-6 Chalk Art using Bill Peet Literature

We would like to connect with a school to present art creations made by our 6th grade classes with local chalk artist, Rachel Browning. Our students will be focusing their art efforts on The Wump World by Bill Peet. It is advised that your class become familiar with this book before the connection. Local chalk artist Rachel Browning will be teaching our students the importance of saving the environment using chalk as the medium. Students will focus on one environmental issue and depict the world through chalk artistry, both before and after the problem is solved. We invite you to connect with us to see their finalized art projects and listen to the narratives they have written about their drawings. Ms. Browning, chalk artist, will also be present at this connection. This connection is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Local Capacity Building Program, administered in Jefferson, Leis, and St. Lawrence counties by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.

Gr. K Jobs People Do Riddles

I have several Pre-K classrooms located in Newport News, VA looking to connect with other Pre-K or Kindergarten classrooms during the time frame of Wednesday, February 1st – Friday, February 10th on the following project.

Each classroom will select 7 – 9 jobs, with a total of 14-18 jobs represented in the project. Each classroom will create riddles for the jobs they selected. During the video conference, students in each class would be grouped so 2 – 3 students present a riddle and visual clues. The collaborating class will try to guess the job.

When classes connect, they can begin the video conference with sharing where they are located and also share information about their school and/or weather outside. Classes can also share a song with each other.

2nd Grade Pen Pals

A 2nd grade class in upstate New York would like to create a Pen Pal project where students would be able to learn the proper way to write and address letters. We would like to be able to actually mail letters to some friends across the US. This doesn't have to be a continual project and we could connect via video conference in order for students to meet face-to-face. My name is Rocio Horzepa and I am a Spanish IB teacher at Linden High School in Linden, New Jersey, USA, a secondary school located about a half an hour away from New York City. The purpose of my e-mail is to make contact with a sister IB school in Spain to initiate an international exchange program.
In our school, exchange programs are highly regarded and are currently in existence with Italy, Germany, China, and France. This program promotes friendship at a global scale in the true spirit of the International Baccalaureate program. Therefore we would be interesting in creating a Spanish exchange for the school year 2012-2013 with Madrid, Barcelona, Santander, Cadiz, or Malaga.

Gr1 Shared Digital Storytelling

I am looking for 1st grade classes that are willing to help us create digital stories.
My first grade students will create the beginning, another class will create the middle, and a third class will create the end of the story.

Each student will draw a digital picture and record their voice telling their part of their story.
The teachers will then send the story on to the next class where their students will add their piece of the story.
This will be done one more time to add the ending until there is a complete story.
Students can then meet and share their stories and experiences with the classes.

Any digital drawing program that can export and image will work; the same is true with the voice recording. I can be help the schools decide programs to use if needed.

Gr K-5 Snowman Exchange

Join other classrooms for a Snowman Exchange via Videoconference! Students practice descriptive writing, geometry, teamwork, following directions, and presentation skills.

Hilliard City Schools, Columbus, Ohio, is looking to extend the Snowman Exchange collaboration project into 2012. We are looking for other classroom teachers who would be willing to pair up with classroom teachers from our school district. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR GRADE LEVEL AND DATE/TIME YOU ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS COLLABORATION! This will make it easier for us to partner with you.

You will be partnered with another class around the same grade level (if available). Each class will create their own unique snowman and write step-by-step instructions how they created it. Then partners will exchange instructions via email and create a second snowman based on their partner's instructions. Then during January 3 – February 16, classes will connect over videoconference (H.323) and share their snowman. The classes will also share about their school and community and be able to ask questions of the partner class.

This project is like the Monster Exchange but with the winter theme.

It is important that you communicate effectively with partner teacher to ensure date/time of connection. Students can work as a group or in small groups to create snowman and write directions. Duties may be given to students to make sure everyone is involved. Class sets of snowman may be created, but this will be very time consuming during the sharing portion of the videoconference, so selecting 1-3 of the class favorite snowmen is more appropriate.
Responsibilities:	Teachers - 1. Will correspond via email with the collaborating teacher to discuss timeframe for the activity. 2. Work with his/her own students to create a class snowman. 3. Work with his/her own students to write a set of directions for how to create their class snowman. 4. Exchange instructions/directions with the collaborating teacher. 5. Gr K-3 Class Stuffed Animal Mascot Exchange:

Students in 8 classrooms from Grapevine, Texas ranging from Kindergarten through 3rd grade are looking to exchange their class stuffed animal mascot for the school year with another class outside the state of Texas. Each class will select a class stuffed animal for their mascot and journal daily activities around their class and school. By the beginning of October, each class will then exchange their stuffed animal for the school year. The students are encouraged to take the stuffed animal home to explore the local community. Students will use a Wiki to document their adventures with the stuffed animal through writing, photos, and video. Each class will also connect through video conferencing twice during the school year (specific dates and times to be determined by participating teachers). During the video conference students will share curriculum related information to reflect what is being taught in the classroom. At the end of April students will say goodbye to their friend and be reunited with their original class stuffed animal mascot.

In this lesson, students meet Timeslider Chad, a distinguished gentleman with a brand new 1914 Model T Ford who finds himself transported to 2007. Students must use map and math skills to help Chad find his way to Jacobs Field in his new car so he can see the Cleveland Indians play baseball. The Timeslider shares some Cleveland baseball history about League Park and the Cleveland Naps along the way. This is a fun way to learn pre-algebra skills and is part of three different experiential learning IVC programs offered through the Math Connections program offered by University Circle Interactive Cleveland. Math Connections assists middle school students in the understanding of targeted math standards by using museums as extensions of the classroom. In this program, GNG will examine the causes and consequences of Mexican immigration with young people through both macro and micro lens' - vis-a-vis political, parochial and personal perspectives. In turn, students will discuss these issues with their peers in other parts of the world to glean insight as to how to tackle immigration in their respective communities.

Mystery of the Moose: Minnesota's Vanishing Icon | Minnesota Zoo

The moose has long been a symbol of Minnesota's wild northern territories and beyond. However, in recent years the moose's presence in Minnesota seems to be dwindling. This program focuses on both the characteristics of the moose and its place in the ecosystem as well as the work being done by researchers attempting to confirm and explain the moose's gradual disappearance from Minnesota. After examining the evidence and the methods used to collect it, students will deliberate on their own theories of why the moose is vanishing.

The tallest point in the northeastern United States and strategically located at the convergence of three major storm tracks, the summit of Mount Washington is battered year-round by some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. Nowhere else on Earth is found such a consistent combination of sub-zero temperatures, hurricane-force winds, freezing fog and driving snow.
Through interactive video conferencing, students go live to the summit of Mount Washington and learn about climate and weather from the people who know it best: the hardy men and women living and working in the Observatory's legendary summit weather station. They'll share their first-hand knowledge and experience in an exciting, interactive format.

Canada's Deadliest Rock Slide | Frank Slide Interpretive Centre

On April 29, 1903 ninety million tons of rock fell from the face of Turtle Mountain onto a portion of the town of Frank, Alberta (then Northwest Territories), killing over 90 people in Canada's (and North America's) deadliest rockslide. Take a virtual tour of a trail from the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre out into the rocks of the slide and learn the tales of tragedy and triumph during this catastrophic event. Hear the stories of those who survived the rock avalanche and learn whether another rockfall is coming from Turtle Mountain.

K-6 Author Mystery Quest

Students will create and participate in an Author Mystery Quest. Classes will choose a book within a given genre. The students will research the authors birthplace and other facts. Students will use Google Earth to post flags identifying the authors birthplace. Then they will write a set of clues for other classes to help them discover the authors birthplace. Along with posting the location, students also include a book review (as a skit, play, poster...etc.)
