Grades 2-4: Similarities & differences between American and Rural/Suburban Danish 3rd Graders

Objective of Collaboration | We are participating in the SEE HEAR FEEL Film Program for 3rd Graders in conjunction with the Jacob Burns Film Center/ Media Lab, Pleasantville, NY. One of the films the students will be studying is a Danish film titled ‘Going Back Home’. It is the story of a 3rd grader whose parents move her from Copenhagen to a rural hamlet in the countryside. The differences between city life and country living is highlighted between clash of cultures between the girl and a new neighbor about her same age. The film introduces our students in Suffern, New York to rural life in Denmark. Our students will recognize familiar themes and emotions. Being able to communicate with students living in a community similar to the one shown in the film will accomplish worthwhile goals such as: 1. They will gain insight into the fact that we as people have a great deal in common despite the differences in language and geography. 2. Differing cultures can be found within the same country or community and this doesn’t only occur when people live great distances apart. We have PolyCom equipment. Class size should be limited to approximately 20-25 students.

Objective of Collaboration | Pittsburgh, PA, Fifth Grade class is seeking multiple partners from around the country for Flat Stanley to visit. Classrooms can exchange Stanleys and share information about their town via video conference. Teachers can work with their students to post pictures of the travelers as they visit their location. They can through a video conference, talk about their town as they sort through web posted pictures of Stanley's adventures. The thrill of viewing their Stanley live from a distant location would add to the experience. Our school has full video conference capacity using IP address for connection.
