Description: | Prior to videoconference, each class will find objects in their classrooms to measure. Students will measure each object for height, length, width, area, perimeter, and volume. After finding and recording the results, students will make brainteasers (riddles) for the partner class and their own classmates to solve during the videoconference. Use the academic challenge format to solve challenging problems or brainteasers with your partner class.
Need some ideas? Think of some challenging math or science problems. | Dates: | Between February 15 and February 25 (school is not in session on the 21st) from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 p. | Sign up method: | Exploding Collaboration | Grades: | 3, 4 | Subjects: | Elementary All Subjects | Outcomes: | Students will understand math vocabulary of height, length, width, area, perimeter, and volume. Students will also understand reading vocabulary of synonyms and antonyms. | Preparation Time Frame: | You will need at least two periods prior to the connection to (1) record findings and make brainteasers and (2) practice the format. The videoconference should be between 45-60 minutes. | Methods and Activities: | *Students should work in the same small groups as prior to the videoconference. *Each group is responsible for solving the brainteaser that is presented. *Either a PowerPoint presentation, posters, or document camera with the written brainteaser will make it easiest for students to understand the problems. *Students may practice ahead of time with similar brainteasers.
| Responsibilities: | The teacher will need to guide the students in choosing classroom items to be used for the brainteasers. Examples: a book, crayon box, ream of paper, etc. The teacher will also have to organize groups so that all students are participating.
The students are to prepare by making brainteasers prior to the videoconference and then solving other groups’ brainteasers during the videoconference.
| Agenda: | 50 minutes 5 min. Welcome and introductions. Each class shares their location and brief information about their school. The lead teacher gives instructions and reminders. 2-3 min. Classroom A presents brainteaser #1 and #2 visually and orally. 3-5 min. Both sides mute and students from both classrooms attempt to solve. 3-5 min. Both classes (groups) present their solutions and wait for confirmation from classroom A teacher. 2-3 min. Classroom B presents its brainteaser #1 and #2 visually and orally. 3-5 min. Both sides mute and students from both classrooms attempt to solve. 3-5 min. Both classes (groups) present their solutions and wait for confirmation from classroom B teacher.
Repeat this process until you run out of time. If time and interest allows, students may enjoy asking each other questions about their respective locations.
