Grades 2-4: Weather Share


Description:Northern States and Canada? Would you like to connect with a classroom from the South Central Texas to compare and contrast the winter weather? During this videoconference opportunity, your class will be matched up with a class from Comal ISD (near San Antonio) for a 30-45 minute videoconference in which both sides will present what winter is like in each region. Afterwards, the students will be able to ask each other questions about the area in which they live.

Grades 9-11: The Human Impact on Climate Change


Description:On January 11th, the University of Alberta and the Centre for Global Education will be hosting the 3rd annual Human Impact on Climate Change Video Conference. This highly interactive session, focusing on the Grade 10 Science curriculum, will enable your students to talk directly to leading experts and researchers on the impact of human activity on Climate Change while engaging in discussion with their peers across North America. Students will have access to researchers, related articles and an ongoing Blog in which they can post and interact directly with the researchers leading up to the event through an interactive webpage.

There is a limit of 5 schools.

Grade 2: Cultural Exchange


Description:Hello! We are a 2nd grade class at Augusta Circle Elementary in Greenville, SC. Beginning February 7, 2010, we will be studying different cultural regions in the United States. We are looking for primary classrooms in the Northeast, Midwest, or Western regions of the United States. We would like to share our culture in the South, and learn about your culture, too! We will discuss the following cultural characteristics: 1) Linguistic characteristics and sayings (for example, in the South we say, “Hey, ya’ll!); 2) Cuisine; 3) Clothing typically worn; 4) Music your cultural region is known for; 5) Famous natural landforms or landmarks to visit in your region; 6) Weather and climate 7) Cool things about your history; 8) Natural resources in your region

We would like to collaborate antime beginning February 14 through the next few weeks. We expect the chat to last about 30 minutes. If you are interested in getting to know about our culture here in the South, please let us know! We look forward to meeting you!

Grades 4-5: Childhood Stories of The Great Depression


Description:4th grade class from the NYC area would like to team up with other USA class to share memories of childhood during The Great Depression. Our class will invite older adult to visit our school speak and conference with your students. Students will get to ask and answer questions during the event. In preperation for the event our students will study the New York area during the 1930's. We would like to share the experience with another class who has studied the Great Depression and could even have a guest speaker of their own. Collaboration will take place in March and take about 40- 60 minutes.

Grades K-4: Kids Helping Kids in the Gulf Shore


Description:As part of our character education program at Cornwall Elementary School, located in Cornwall, New York, we are looking for an elementary school located in the Gulf Shores whom have been affected by the BP oil spill.

There are many areas of curriculum that we would like to cover such as; civics, science, history, and culture, as part of our character education program. Our school is proud of our Kids Helping Kids program. As a part of our mission this school year we want to make friends and help our new friends out by holding fundraising events to supply your school/classrooms with needed items. This can all begin with friendly letters by handwriting and emailing (if possible). Besides the civic component we also would like to compare/contrast our ecosystem with yours, as well as learn about each other’s cultures. Throughout this project the children would like to visit their new friends via video conferencing, if possible. Our different grade levels would like to start this as soon as possible! We foresee this project running throughout the entire school year.

Description:We have some first grade classes that would like to share the knowledge they are gaining about their state of Texas, by sharing some interesting state facts, a little about our capital, where we live and about a rodeo. In return we would like to learn about another state in the United States. We would like to learn about your capital, your symbols, and about where you live. We would like to VC with the class where we can also discuss the differences and/or similarities that we experience where we are too.

Outcomes:We are addressing a variety of Social Studies standards in our curriculum by learning about communities outside of our own. We would like the learner to accomplish an awareness of anothers community by what they are presented with and learned through the process.
Preparation Time Frame:1 hour
Methods and Activities:We would like to see photos/creations of the items the students will be discussing for visual reference. We are going to have our students present their information to the other class by showcasing their speaking to a group and visual aids. We would like our collaborating class to do the same so we can "see" what you are telling us about. We would like to also have a Question and Answer period where the students can ask each other about where they live.
Responsibilities:Students will each present a piece of our state information. The teachers will guide students in their presentations and help aid questions when needed.
Agenda:Teachers will introduce their classes (each group), then teachers will guide the order of the discussion, having students come up and share one site at a time based on the information that we are presenting, state flower, bird, capital, etc. The students will then have time at the end to ask questions to the other class.

I have several teachers interested in doing the Snowmen at Night collaboration. Based on the book "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Buehner, students create artwork of their snowman doing an activity at night and write a descriptive paragraph of what their snowman is doing. Snowmen can be shared with their partner schools during the videoconference.
