Grade 5: 2011 Great Race Project

Description:Columbiana County ESC and NCOESC in Ohio would like to invite you to participate in the 5th annual “Great Race” program. Over the last 5 years 5th grade classrooms from around the United States have raced across the country learning geography, social studies, science and math. Each year has been a new race. This years Great Race theme is "Island Paradise” students will race from Key West, FL to the Hawaiian Island of Maui.

Here is a brief overview of the project. Fifth grade classrooms from around the nation will race from Florida to Hawaii. Each class will be a team and the team that gets there the quickest, spending least amount of money, stopping at all the cultural and geographically historical places given to them will be the winners.

There will be three videoconferences. The first will be the kick off of the race on Wednesday Feb 9th. During this connection students and teachers will learn the rules of the race and what to expect. There will be a midpoint connection and then a final connection to announce the winner in early May.

Objective of Collaboration I have written a play dealing with bullying from the last five years speaking to students, educators, and others on this topic from my book Don't Feed the Bully. The play is for high school ages and older. I need a drama group from a high school to work with me on adapting it to video conference. Whatever that means. Want a challenge? I will send the script. We will do a read through, and then talk about changes needed to adapt it to video conference, and then work out the program. Your group will direct this piece, as we figure it out.
