25 Videoconference Content Providers under one virtual tent! Visit museums, science centers, cultural centers and aquaria around the world during this exciting one-day adventure! Take a look at all of the fantastic virtual sessions that the providers have created for the carnival! 25 lucky MAGPI schools will be able to participate in the program as interactive videoconference sites -- getting one-on-one attention via video from one of our content partners. Everyone else will be able to view the live webstream and interact with the content providers via Twitter. What a great way to preview interactive videoconference programs from these fantastic content providers!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

Interactive Videoconference Sites: We’re looking for 25 MAGPI classes that want to take a virtual ride with a content provider. Each participating content provider has prepared a 20-25 minute “mini-lesson” that showcases their organization’s virtual field trips. Interactive video conference schools will have an opportunity to participate one-on-one with the content provider during their session. All IVC sites must be MAGPI members and have H.323 videoconference equipment.

Interested in being an interactive videoconference site during the Content Provider Carnival? To apply, please complete the IVC site application form NO LATER than September 15, 2011. All schools that apply will be notified by Sept. 30th.

Webstream Sites: MAGPI will be running two simultaneous webstream channels throughout the Carnival. All webstream sites need to do is find the session below that they are interested in viewing and click here to view. Have a question for a particular content provider? Tweet it to @magpik20, using hashtag #vccarnival. The two simultaneous live webstreamx will be available at http://video.magpi.net

Get Me To the Game On Time | Math Connections, University Circle
audience: grades 6-8
In this lesson, students meet Timeslider Chad, a distinguished gentleman with a brand new 1914 Model T Ford who finds himself transported to 2007. Students must use map and math skills to help Chad find his way to Jacobs Field in his new car so he can see the Cleveland Indians play baseball. The Timeslider shares some Cleveland baseball history about League Park and the Cleveland Naps along the way. This is a fun way to learn pre-algebra skills and is part of three different experiential learning IVC programs offered through the Math Connections program offered by University Circle Interactive Cleveland. Math Connections assists middle school students in the understanding of targeted math standards by using museums as extensions of the classroom. The goal is to improve math skills by using artifacts and resources in their collections to demonstrate math principles through the application of real-world problems.

Be a Transformer! | Challenger Learning Center of Greater Rochester
audience: grades 4-6
Be a Transformer with Astronaut Andy! Commander Raab will lead your crew through an exploration of the 7 delicious flavors of Energy! This is a hands-on, engaging tour de force for virtual learning. Each session features a fun kit of "energy toys" for learners to experiment with before reporting out to the Commander on their real life findings. The session concludes with the "Energy Game Show" as a check for understanding.

A Taste of "The Gingerbread Boy" | Center for Puppetry Arts
audience: grades K-2
Participants will interact with the Center's Distance Learning educators while they learn all about the gingerbread boy stories told around the world. Participants will "run" through the pages of several books such as The Musubi Man, The Run Away Rice Cake, and the Gingerbread Cowboy while comparing stories and making their own imaginary gingerbread with "real" ingredients such as wheat (flour), cinnamon quills, and ginger root. A nine minute shadow play on the traditional story is also included along with a hands-on puppet building activity. Join us for our MOST POPULAR program!

Sharks Alive! | Mote Marine Laboratory

Don't be afraid! See sharks up close and learn the truth about them! Students will experience a narrated shark feeding and training session originating from our 135,000-gallon shark tank. Learn all about the animals that live at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and how our aquarists care for them. Ask our experts questions about the critters as we watch them eat a little snack!

States of Matter: Solids, Liquids, Gases & Beyond | NASA Digital Learning Network
audience: grades 6-9
NASA scientists and engineers utilize the basic principles of the states of matter on a daily basis. The states and properties of matter are very important to the design and construction of NASA spacecraft. Participants in this event explore the states of matter and discover the extreme cases NASA encounters.

Surviving the Oregon Trail: What should we take? | Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum
audience: grades 4-6
This program looks at the decisions that emigrants had to make as they prepared to cross the continent on the Oregon Trail. Students will become familiar with the supplies and equipment needed to cross the America continent successfully in wagons in the 1840's. Using inquiry learning students will evaluate which items were essential for survival and which items were luxuries.

Chinese To Go | Asian Studies Collaborative, Berks County IU
audience: grades 9-12
Chinese teachers at the BCIU will present an interactive, introductory lesson of Chinese level I. They will use videoconferencing equipment, a touchscreen computer, and document camera to showcase language learning at a distance.

PULSE (Current Affairs) Program: Border Crossings - Mexico/US | Global Nomads Group
audience: grades 9-12
Border Crossings: Mexico/US Immigration, or the movement of people from developing countries to seemingly more modernized nations, has been a perennial issue for decades around the world. Whether the focus has been on the influx of Africans to the European continent, or Mexicans and South Americans illegally entering the United States, immigration continues to be at the forefront of the political conversation. Why is it important? In this program, GNG will examine the causes and consequences of Mexican immigration with young people through both macro and micro lens' - vis-a-vis political, parochial and personal perspectives. In turn, students will discuss these issues with their peers in other parts of the world to glean insight as to how to tackle immigration in their respective communities.

Mystery of the Moose: Minnesota's Vanishing Icon | Minnesota Zoo
audience: grades 3-5
The moose has long been a symbol of Minnesota's wild northern territories and beyond. However, in recent years the moose's presence in Minnesota seems to be dwindling. This program focuses on both the characteristics of the moose and its place in the ecosystem as well as the work being done by researchers attempting to confirm and explain the moose's gradual disappearance from Minnesota. After examining the evidence and the methods used to collect it, students will deliberate on their own theories of why the moose is vanishing.

Looking at modern and contemporary works of art, we explore the question of “How do artists inspire us to see everyday objects in new ways?” Students investigate the ways in which artists manipulate formal elements of art including line, shape, scale, color, and medium to create new innovations and surprising works of art.

Home of the World's Worst Weather | Mount Washington Observatory
audience: grades 5-7
The tallest point in the northeastern United States and strategically located at the convergence of three major storm tracks, the summit of Mount Washington is battered year-round by some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. Nowhere else on Earth is found such a consistent combination of sub-zero temperatures, hurricane-force winds, freezing fog and driving snow.
Through interactive video conferencing, students go live to the summit of Mount Washington and learn about climate and weather from the people who know it best: the hardy men and women living and working in the Observatory's legendary summit weather station. They'll share their first-hand knowledge and experience in an exciting, interactive format.

Learn about how cowgirls are more than boots and hats. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame has 199 honorees - women who change the West and shape the world. Discover the stories and adventures of some of these women and how they reinvented the term 'cowgirl.'

Canada's Deadliest Rock Slide | Frank Slide Interpretive Centre
audience: grades 4-6
On April 29, 1903 ninety million tons of rock fell from the face of Turtle Mountain onto a portion of the town of Frank, Alberta (then Northwest Territories), killing over 90 people in Canada's (and North America's) deadliest rockslide. Take a virtual tour of a trail from the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre out into the rocks of the slide and learn the tales of tragedy and triumph during this catastrophic event. Hear the stories of those who survived the rock avalanche and learn whether another rockfall is coming from Turtle Mountain.

Squid Dissection | Aquarium of the Pacific
audience: grades 9-12
During this session students will have the opportunity to dissect a squid in their classroom! Aquarium of the Pacific educators will lead the students through a dissection as we take a close look at internal and external squid anatomy. How does a squid swim? How many arms does a squid have? These are questions that will be answered during this engaging, hands-on videoconference.

Join the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History as we explore really cool solids and liquids with your students. These materials assist us as we uncover important matter concepts with students, such as the behavior of liquids and gases and why materials change states. We'll float bubbles, freeze air and make clouds together during this interactive session.

Artie the bear (a cartoon avatar) will introduce students to the concepts of winter changes and hibernation through songs, poems and discussion.
