Read Around the Planet

February 23 - March 11

TWICE invites you to participate in a celebration of reading using videoconference technology! Classes can participate in English, or a variety of other languages, or special education. Classes share skits, raps, original poetry/writing, songs, game shows, and more. Many ideas for connecting to your curriculum are shared in the teacher packet.

TWICE provides a matching service for point-to-point videoconferences between schools. Teacher matching is done based on your registration information. Participating schools are responsible for making the connections work successfully.

*Disclaimer. While we are using this name to be inclusive to our international friends, this name does NOT guarantee U.S. schools an international connection. They will be matched randomly in this project with over 90% of the participating classes from the United States.

This project is open to all K-12 students in public and private schools. The school must have access to IP (H.323) videoconference equipment to participate (i.e. Polycom, Tandberg, LifeSize, Sony, etc.).

-------------------------------------------------------

Important Dates

http://www.twice.cc/verify/ Get it done by December 1!

If you’ve already verified your equipment, make sure you have self-certified it for this school year – your grey IP icon turns to color!

3. Get Teachers Registered: Starting December 1. Coordinators can register for teachers or teachers can register. Pick the times & language for your connection. ***Be sure to select ALL the days and times you can do. If you only pick one day/time, it\'s very hard to find a partner for you.***

Description:Our small 12th grade class read Lord of the Flies by William Golding. We would like to do a video conference for 90 minutes to discuss the book with another class or group of students. We would like to share our impressions about the characters, themes and symbols.
Before we connect, please have the students post to my wallwisher:

http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/lotf2010

When we connect, we will begin by having students share what they posted. (Hopefully, this will break the ice and allow them to feel more comfortable and not so nervous.) Next, we will play a game called "Guess the Wordle". (I will send all of this to you once created). Then, we will discuss how natural disasters (such as the earthquake in Haiti) often mirror Lord of the Flies. We will watch 2 video clips of shows that mirror Lord of the Flies (LOST and Cast Away). We will then do a cell phone activity (make sure they bring them to class that day), the SMARTBoard activity, and close with the Jeopardy game.
