Grades 9-12: Students Dialogue with Students!

I would like to collaborate with a high school social studies class to engage in dialogue about the students' differing views on rural and/or urban education, cultural and community issues. I would like to have students connect throughout next year. Meeting a few times a month. We are a small rural school in Vermont, USA. If the time schedule of all year, etc... doesn't work for you- I am happy to be flexible. I would just so love to use this technology for dialogue and collaboration between students so they can talk about what is important to them!

Grades 9-12: Genocide and Human Rights Project 2010

The Eastchester UFSD and Global-Leap are proud to announce the 2010 Genocide and Human Rights Project.

The project involves a series of international multi-point videoconferences with recognized experts that focus on five historical events: the genocides in Armenia, Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Sudan.

Each of the video conferences provides an opportunity for high school/secondary school students to interact with each other and a guest expert to learn about the events, share their knowledge and exchange ideas. The format of these moderated conferences includes an opening statement by the guest expert, followed by a round-robin Q&A session with the expert.

In addition to these video conferences, students from participating schools collaborate on a wiki about genocide/human rights and develop an “action project” that impacts on genocide or human rights. These projects are shared during the final, culminating video conference.

The conference dates/times are as follows:

April 20: The 8 Stages of Genocide with Dr. Gregory Stanton (George Mason University)
9:00-10:15am EST

*April 26: Genocide In Bosnia with Dr. David Pettigrew (Southern Connecticut University) 9:00-10:15am EST

April 29: Armenian Genocide with Dr. Peter Balakian (Colgate University)
8:00-9:15am EST

*April 30: Genocide in Bosnia with Dr. William Schabas (Irish Centre for Human Rights) 9:00-10:15am EST

May 19: Genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda with Dr. Gregory Stanton (George Mason University) 9:00-10:15am EST

May 25: Genocide in Darfur with Amanda Hsiao (Enough Project) 9:00-10:15am EST

June 9: Culminating Video Conference
9:00-10:00am EST
Presentation of Action Projects and Program Evaluation Discussion

* We have two experts on the Bosnian genocide who agreed to work with us on the project. They have different viewpoints on what happened and why. You may participate in one or both of these conferences.

We have two schools in the United Kingdom and one school in United States as confirmed participants. We are seeking three more schools that are interested in participating in complete project:
- all the video conferences (at least one on Bosnia)
- the development of wiki
- the "action project"

Participating schools must have an IP video conferencing connection and should be available for a test call to our bridge during the week of April 12-16.

If you are interested participating in the project, please send an email to John Blaser at jblaser@eastchester.k12.ny.us. Your email should include the following information:
