Grades 7-10: HistoryQuest8: Civil War


HistoryQuest8: Civil War

I need some more classes to participate in HistoryQuest8: Civil War!

This project is designed for 8th grade students studying US History. Through video conference technology, students are able to meet other students while learning about United States history. Prior to the video conference each classroom will create a presentation with clues about a mystery person, event, invention, issue/problem or section from a document. The other classrooms, using maps, the Internet, textbooks, and other resources, will try to discover the history mystery presented by each participating classroom.

Grade Level Note: If you study the Civil War in Grade 7, 8, 9, or 10, we'd still love to have you participate!

Grade K: My Letter of the Alphabet


Description:We have a kindergarten class here in Columbia, SC that would like to partner with another kindergarten class to share the letters of the alphabet. Each child will have a letter and they will make a poster with the letter and things they have drawn or cut out that start with that letter. We would also like to share information about our city, state and school.

Description:Students from a first grade class in Virginia would like to connect with a class from another country. Students will have the opportunity to share symbols of their country and explain why they are important. The symbols the first grade class in Virginia would include: the American Flag, Statue of Liberty, Bald Eagle, Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial. We would like your students to share symbols about your country. Students will compare the symbols from both countries.

Grades 9-10: Civil War: Discussion between North and South


Description:We are looking for two 9th or 10th grade classrooms in one of the Southern states to have a discussion about the Civil War. We would like learn about the southern perspective on this great historic event. Once a partner school has contacted us, we can collaborate to create a specific agenda so the discussions is purposeful and meaningful. We hope to have the video conference during the 1st or 2nd week of May.

Preparation Time Frame:You will need a few class periods prior to the connection to prepare your presentation and a 30-40 minute videoconference.
Methods and Activities:Preparation: Have students read and research the various sides of the issue and decide on their personal stance on the topic. Decide how to have students present their stance. Assign tasks and involve as many of your students as possible.
Agenda:Agenda: 30-40 minutes (depending on class periods of participating classes)

5 min. Welcome and introductions. Each class shares their location and brief information about their school.
Visuals: Use the document camera or PowerPoint to share a few pictures of local interest.

5 min. Share Your Stance. Each student/group briefly shares their stance on the topic.
Visuals: Illustrations enhance the experience if there is time.

20-30 min. Discussion. Students from each class take turns discussing the issue. Students should include supporting facts and details from their research in all comments that they make. Participating classes may wish to assign a student facilitator for each class to assist in the flow of discussion.

3 min. Debrief and Conclusion. After the discussion, teachers may wish to debrief and comment on the process and content/curriculum discussed. If time is available, students may enjoy asking each other questions about their respective locations.

Grades K-12: VC for Hope '11


Description:On Thursday, April 28th and Friday, April 29th, students around the world will gather via Video Conference technology to help raise awareness and funds for the building of a school in the remote indigenous community of Walakitang, BOSAWAS, Nicaragua.

On both days, from 08:00-16:00 (MT), schools from across Alberta, North America, and Nicaragua will connect to each other to develop relationships, share culture and ideas, and examine the impact of Globalization on indigenous communities and the environment.
