Grades 10-12: Monster Literature

Description:Students will read and study Frankenstein and Twilight to determine why authors use "monsters" to highlight the evil within humanity.

Preparation Time Frame:3 weeks
Methods and Activities:Students will read Frankenstein and Twilight and compare the authors' use of the "monster" to interpret the duality that lies within humans. Who is truly the monster in each of the novels? They will use class discussion (Socratic Seminar) to comprehend each text and prepare them for the interactive session. Students will compare and contrast character development, theme and author's purpose.
Responsibilities:Students will read each novel and discuss their similarities and differences in relation to theme, character development and author's purpose. They will prepare to share their understanding with students of the other school. Teachers will share unit activities leading up to the session.
Agenda:Kansas teacher will present the initial question directed to the partner school. Students will then take over the discussion interacting with each other. Teachers will monitor to insure no one school monopolizes the event.
