Grades 9-12: The Wizard of Oz

Description:
High School students read the classic tale by L. Frank Baum on The Wizard of Oz and study it as an allegory. Students prepare questions and observations over the novel.

Subjects:Language Arts/English
Outcomes:Students will determine the allegorical elements of the Wizard of Oz and why Baum chose these particular characters. Analysis and comparison to modern day events will also be addressed.
Preparation Time Frame:2 weeks
Methods and Activities:Students will read the novel and then discuss the allegory elements of the novel as well as how the novel relates to modern society.
Responsibilities:Students will each read a chapter and then develop 5 study guide questions over their chapter. They will then present the chapter to the class who will use the study guide concept to understand the novel to prepare them for the interactive session.
Agenda:Kansas teacher will begin the session with an open question directed to the partner school's students. Students will then exhange ideas and observations of the novel and present day applications.
