Grades 4-5: Parts Of Speech Mad Libs

Description:I am looking for another 4th or 5th grade class to do Mad Libs with.

What needs to be done ahead of time:
Students would work in groups (4-5 groups per class) to create a Mad Libs (they can write their own, or use an piece of writing-fairy tale, etc.)

They will replace 7 words in the story and number them 1-7 and replace them with blanks. They will list the 7 parts of speech and say them on the VC so the other class can switch off.

This is a great opportunity to review parts of speech with your classes (noun, proper noun, plural noun, verb, verb -ed, verb -ing, adjective, adverb, interjection)

During the VC:

Class 1: Go around room "Hi, my name is_____."

Class 2: Go around room "Hi, my name is_____."

Class 1: Share a little about school, community, hobbies etc. (w/ the 1st graders I had the students have a sentence strip that said "We go to Robbins Lane School", "We live on Long Island", "There are about 500 students in our school", etc. About 10-15 sentence strips. (We like to show a picture of our school, our mascot, and where we are on the map...the students love the visuals!)

Class 2: Students will share about thier school, community, life, etc.

Class 1: Students have the opportunity to ask questions, I had the students brain storm ahead of time- they came up with things like, "what specials do you go to?" What time do you go to school?, are there any twins in your class? etc., like 5-7 questions.

Class 2: Class will ask questions.

Now for the Mad Libs part:

Class 1: Group one will stand up. Person 1 will name the parts of speech, other class will name their choices and person 2 from group 1 will write them down then person 3 will read the completed story. They will all sit down.

Class 2: Their group one will do the same.

Repeat until all 5 groups in both classes have gone.

Depending on how long this takes, we can have the students share their favorite part of this activity.

We can also have the students ask any other questions, maybe not ones that they thought of ahead of time.

Dates:Between April 6 and 15
Sign up method:Exploding Collaboration
Grades:4, 5
Subjects:Elementary All Subjects, Language Arts/English, Technology/Information Science
Outcomes:Students will have the opportunity to learn about the school and community they are collaborating with.

Students will be able to practice using the correct part of speech.
Preparation Time Frame:40 minutes
Credit:This project was originally done in NY by GST Boces, however all of my teachers were not ready to do it by their deadline.
